Poverty: A Curse

Written by; Mr Anown

Poverty is the condition of lack or absence of essential resources like food, clothing and shelter. In fact it is the biggest sin of the world. Tulsidas has described in Shri Ramcharitmanas: “Nahin daridra sam dukh jag mahi”1. He has described poverty as the biggest sorrow of the world.

Why is Poverty a curse?

He had not yet seen his father’s face. The mother who raised her since childhood was no more in this world. Mother’s love was never destined because mother lived only one day at a time. Every morning after feeding him, leaving him alone in the house, the mother would go somewhere. And after coming home at night, after feeding him, putting him to sleep, she would sleep. He grew up by seeing this everyday.

By working the whole day, she could earn only enough to fill her stomach. She was getting sick and was not able to see a doctor. Along with the disease, the fear of the future was also eating him from inside. The death she feared and the future she was worried about had come true. The cause of his death was a minor illness.

Neither any of his own had near and nor the contractor society. He never went to school and did not know how to read. Hunger was knocking on his stomach. The boy was now an orphan. Filling the stomach is the biggest problem and challenge before a 10 year old child. He has no one to feed him.

Think about

The environment in which he grew up without mother’s love and values. So what kind of income would he make money from:

  1. By begging
  2. By stealing
  3. Working at the hotel
  4. In other way

Whatever may be your answer, statistics say that more than 90% of crimes are committed by the poors. Some are implicated by the rich, some have been forced by the Government and society to become like this, some are threatened with crime. Whatever the reason, it’s the truth and That’s why poverty is a curse.

About Story and Reality

This story is based on the life of many poor, orphan children.

  • A mother leaves her child alone at home to feed the child of another mother. The child of a rich mother gets the love of two mothers and the child of a poor mother gets none. Whose fault is it?
  • When a mother is ill, she is short of both time and suitable money.  Who is responsible for it?

There is no single cause of poverty and its results vary according to each situation. This story shows some of the consequences of poverty according to just one situation. Poverty can mean very different things within the borders of a country. Feeling poor in India is different from living in poverty in America.

Poverty reduction

Despite the many reasons, one thing is certain; Poverty is a complex problem. No matter how poverty is defined, It can be agreed that this is an issue that needs everyone’s attention. The government plays the most important role in this.

  1. Many people said: The poors should become rich by their own hard work. It is not reasonable to say so. No man himself becomes what he is. Country and its politics, society, parents, language and many other things are important in making it.
  2. Many people also suggest distributing the money equally among all. China tried2 to do this once in which they failed. The main reason among many is the decline of intrinsic motivation. People do less work due to less intrinsic motivation. The work of the people has a direct impact on the resources of the country. Due to lack of resources, the country becomes poor.
  3. Government plays most important role in Poverty:
    • The income of a person living in a metropolitan city like Delhi is 10,000. In the next month his monthly income becomes 11,000. Even then his basic needs will not be fulfilled.
    • His monthly income has not increased at all in the next month. Food, health, electricity become free from the policy of the government, that person can lead a comfortable life.

Pay attention

A poor person can live easily only by arranging the necessary resources properly. By doing many things like donating in favour of ending poverty, this problem can be reduced but will not end. Give due respect and suitable salary3 to the person working in your house or enterprise. Discuss the topic of poverty alleviation with your friends and relatives and give advice to them.
